'Internet of Things' Driving Change for Enterprise Data Centers
“The times they are a-changin’,” sang Bob Dylan in his 1964 song of the same title. The same is true for the enterprise data center in 2016. Of course, the world of data centers is constantly evolving, but as the number of internet-connected devices increases and cloud computing becomes more commonplace, it seems that the times are changing faster than ever.
Recent Gartner research projects that there will be 20.8 billion devices connected to the Internet of Things by 2020. That’s more than triple the number connected today. This influx of internet-connected devices will increase the amount of data created and thereby the space required to store that data. And that data will have to be analyzed quickly.
At a recent Gartner conference in Las Vegas, Gartner, Inc. Research Director Henrique Cecci said not all of the Internet of Things demands will be external. Internet of Things-connected devices will also be increasingly integrated inside the data center to record temperatures, monitor security and conduct other asset management-related tasks.
Meanwhile, as the amount of data being processed grows, security concerns are growing as well. Data breaches are becoming more prevalent and broader in scale while industry and government regulations are becoming more stringent. The cost of a data breach is also increasing. A 2015 Ponemon Group study showed the average cost of a data breach jumped 23% in 2014 to $3.8 million. Pair that with more devices accessing data, and it becomes increasingly challenging for companies to keep their data safe.
