Summer is on the Way - Cooling Your Data Center

Get Ready to Beat the Summer Heat with a Sustainable Cooling System

As we enter the hottest months of the year, we want to highlight the efforts QTS makes to keep our data centers cooled while maintaining sustainable practices. We are conscientious of the fact that energy is one of the largest costs incurred by a data center over its lifetime. A December 2015 study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration found that commercial energy rates ranged from an average of $6.85 per kilowatt-hour in Oklahoma to $15.26 per kilowatt-hour in Rhode Island. It is important to find a data center with sustainable strategies in place to accommodate these elevated energy demands.

QTS’ Commitment to Sustainability

At QTS, we have made a commitment to be great environmental stewards as well as great data management partners. All QTS facilities have Energy Star Program and standardized use of blanking panels, which save more than 4 million kWh annually.  QTS also participates annually in the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps program. From reusing brownfield properties and transforming them into state-of-the-art data centers, to harvesting millions of gallons of rooftop rainwater, we take every opportunity to make our practices more sustainable.

The Kyoto Cooling Solution

Keeping equipment cool is an energy expensive process, with energy demand fluctuating across regional variations. Cooling usually makes up 30% of the electricity load at a data center. QTS has prioritized energy efficient cooling for our data centers and equipment, which is why we have adopted the KyotoCooling Solution. QTS’ Chicago facility is the only data center in Chicago that uses KyotoCooling, the most economical and efficient data center cooling solution on the market today. KyotoCooling technology is 90% effective in heat rejection and minimizes constant free cooling hours. With the lowest PUE in the industry, KyotoCooling saves millions of kWh of energy per data center.

Are you prepared for the rising temperatures? Choose a data center that protects your equipment, minimizes energy costs and exercises sustainable practices.
