Bringing the Triple Threat to the Data Center Industry
This past week, I’ve been spending a lot of time visiting with the QTS team in our amazing new Chicago data center to support our board meeting and People Rally (we have a quarterly all hands event we stream to the QTS team across all our facilities).
As I worked on my presentation, I spent a little time researching American sporting analogies to help describe our position and strategy. Coming from the UK where the scope of mainstream sports tends to be limited to football (aka soccer), cricket and rugby with maybe a sprinkle of motor sports, the US sports scene has been a real education.
The idea and concept of a triple threat is a very interesting one: “an expert in three different fields or in three different skills in the same field”.
I’m not sure I could think of a better sporting analogy to fit with QTS’ strategy and our amazing Chicago data center.
1. Chicago is one of our latest mega data centers to open. Sitting on a 30-acre campus and supporting 317,000 sq. ft. of space available and 24MW of critical power, it’s a site that can support demands of the largest customers (with our Custom Data Center Solutions), with plenty more space to grow beyond the current footprint. The history of the data center itself and our approach to the technology in the build warrants its own blog post. Let’s just say there is nothing else like this build in the US.
2. If you’re looking for the flexibility to bring your own infrastructure into more of a colocation solution, we have that as well. From racks to cages, we can meet any requirement customers might have. QTS Chicago has an amazing connectivity story with a diverse set of carriers and cloud providers being just a cross-connect away. To complement colocation, QTS can also provide a wide range of managed services to support everything from managing the maintenance and repair of infrastructure (QTS Hardware Assure) to security, systems, storage and network management.
3. Our third threat is our cloud and managed hosting solutions. QTS supports customers providing all cloud deployment and support models. So whether you need a bare metal solution to power your Hadoop platform or a fully managed private cloud built with a wide range of technologies, QTS has you covered.
While the capabilities mentioned above are unique among our peer group, what really makes QTS a triple threat is that all three product families are fully integrated and supported by our Operations Support Center (OSC). In the age of hybrid computing, it is no longer enough to be able to support just one delivery model. We find customer demand multiple solutions and a partner who can flex and evolve with their business requirements and fully embrace them utilizing public cloud providers in hybrid form with their own infrastructure and services.
In fact, going full circle, this was the theme of my presentation at our “People Rally.” The flexibility afforded by the integrated services approach allows QTS to support our customers like no other. The industry has locked in on hybrid becoming the default mode of consumption for IT services, when everyone from analysts to management platforms to public cloud providers themselves. I think it’s fair to say we are beyond a fad and into true adoption.
This brings me back to another sporting quote to wrap up this post, “skate to where the puck is going, not where it’s been." As exemplified by our Chicago facility, QTS is living this with our services and capabilities every day.
