Expert Panel Featuring QTS’ Cloud Expert Discusses Federal Hybrid IT

Last month marked a year since the release of the Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI). In August of 2016 DCOI was established and replaced the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative of 2010. This mandate precipitated adoption of cloud services for government agencies and system integrators and highlighted the need to optimize infrastructure and data center operations through private sector partnerships.

The strategies developed to address these new requirements align with a growing trend in the government sector: hybrid IT. As agencies move infrastructure to data center providers and migrate an increasing number of applications into the cloud, the hybrid methodology is becoming less of an emerging concept and more the logical path forward to a secure and compliant future.

Recently, Federal News Radio hosted an expert panel on how embracing a new hybrid model has helped government agencies innovate and future-proof their IT strategies. During the three segments led by FNR Executive Editor Jason Miller, the panelists discussed a broad range of security and compliance considerations, as well as challenges and opportunities to innovate in the federal hybrid sector. Panelists included Small Business Administration Chief Technology Officer, Sanjay Gupta, QTS Federal Cloud Project Manager, Tim Burke and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency CIO, Benjamin Bergersen.

Key themes discussed by the panelists included:

How federal agencies are moving away from legacy IT and moving applications into the cloud for more elasticity.

ATOs and the role they play in how a provider can meet your security and compliance needs.

How to mitigate risk as you migrate to the cloud and move infrastructure into provider facilities.

How mission requirements impact how IT solutions are incorporated into over-arching strategies.

SLAs and what goes into a “roles and responsibilities” discussion.

The expertise and infrastructure advantages of partnering with a data center and cloud services provider.
